bye-bye, miss american pie

1. doesnt believe in god, but acknowledges that other people do
"the father, son, and holy ghost,/ they caught the last train for the coast"
2. humans are good, but life is morbid and depressing
"bad news on the doorstep"
"i asked her for some happy news,/but she just smiled and turned away"
3. he (his soul) dies with the music
" the days the music died"
"this'll be the day that i die"
4. hope for the music to come back
the first stanza. his hope is what he can remember from his past experiences
5. he values the music
the whole song. obviously the music was a huge part of his life
6. without the music the world sucks
"i saw satan laughing with delight/the day the music died"

The Chronicles of OZ

OZ: girl finds another "world"
on a journey to better themselves
Wizard (god) ends up disappointing them because he was just a man who isnt anymore god than the rest

NARNIA: girl finds another "world"
on a journey to help other people
Aslan (God) saves them by dying for them then coming back to life

...not really sure where I'm going with this... now i'm unsure if OZ is secular or cosmic humanism....

Mammon

Paradise Lost describes Mammon as:
"Mammon, the least erected Spirit that fell
From heav'n, for ev'n in heav'n his looks and thoughts [ 680 ]
Were always downward bent, admiring more
The riches of Heav'ns pavement, trod'n Gold,
Then aught divine or holy else enjoy'd
In vision beatific: by him first
Men also, and by his suggestion taught, [ 685 ]
Ransack'd the Center, and with impious hands
Rifl'd the bowels of thir mother Earth
For Treasures better hid."

in heaven he did not worship and follow god, he focused on the beauty of it and basically everything but the divine.
because of him people dig up the earth and search everything they can in order to find riches.
it also says that he was leading the rest so he must have some power in hell.

wizard of oz worldview

po-mo! they want to get to a higher being, but in the end there isn't one.
in civics, mr gritter told us that it was representing the economical state that our country was in at the 1896 election. dorthy was a lost farmer. scarecrow was a farmer who needed a brain to figure out what was going on. tin man was the city people who work the machines. lion represents the politicians that need the courage to stand up to the corrupt government. the yellow the brick road represents gold. her shoes are actually silver so together the gold and silver work together... thats beside the point...
but after more careful thought i think that it is actually secular humanism...
secular humanists believe that they are on a journey to better themselves, hence the search for heart, brain, courage...
they also believe there is no god. in the end there wasnt. it was just another person who couldnt do anything for them.
finally, they believe that they are ultimately in control of their lives/fate. dorthy had the power to get home the whole time... her shoes.
